A trio of able performers makes up the core of this emotionally complex, candid, humanist drama about a man who finds life so difficult to cope with that he maintains a second marriage in secret for emotional fulfillment. Light-years ahead of the staunchly moralistic politics of the time, “The Bigamist” offers no easy answers, but instead allows the audience to make up its own mind. Edmond O’Brien’s performance as a successful businessman unable to find personal success gives the on-screen story a firm grounding in realism, while Ida Lupino’s direction unfolds without gimmick or political bent, intent on delivering a true-to-life drama.
